New Venture Alert: YouTube

So I decided to finally do it. I have been saying that I’m going to get back to it for the longest and just never did it. Now is no greater time. So many times we tell ourselves that  we are going to do something like start a diet, or read that book that has been sitting on the dresser for the last few months, tomorrow. Everything is tomorrow or next week or next month. We tend to want to wait on that perfect condition before we do anything. Guess what?  That perfect condition is never going to come. Just jump.

I decided to start my YouTube channel again. I’ve been wanting to do this for months but never got around to it. I even have videos locked and loaded. I didn’t post them mostly out of fear. I’m at a different chapter in my life and I’m afraid to turn the page.  No more of that I’m just going to take a leap of faith and if it works out great, if not at least I can say that I tried it. My conscience is clear.

Most of what I plan to discuss is what I discuss here. Just a hosh-posh mess of everything that I talk about here just in video form. Health & wellness, shoes, fashion, politics, tv & movies. You name it. Mostly I will be discussing health & wellness. Physically, mentally as well as spiritually. I think that men, especially black men, don’t discuss health much. Yeah we talk about how to maybe gain muscle or look big but we don’t delve into the mental side of things like depression. Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of yourself physically. I plan to make that my main goal.

How I Stay Stress Free. Mostly…

let’s face it. We have all been stressed or overwhelmed at one or many points in our life. Life can be overwhelming at times. So much to do and so little time. I know I struggle with things like time management which causes me to stress over other things, which leads to other things. Stress is such a slippery slope.

One of the ways that I deal with the stress is through meditation. I find that this allows me to calm my nerves and be a better me. This may not work for everyone but it works wonders for me and if you’re dealing with stress or a stressful situation it can’t hurt to try.

One of my techniques is to control my breathing. Deep 3 second breaths in through my nose and out through the mouth. I do this a few times when I’m in the moment and need to clear some head space. To go deeper, I typically like to sit with my eyes and focus on nothing. Yes, focus on nothing. It is extremely harder than it sounds! After a while you get used to the idea and can do it for a certain amount of time before your mind wanders and needs to be brought back to center. When it wanders just bring it back to center and try again. I suggest starting out with 1 minute a day of quiet time. Nothing more and nothing less. Eventually you can go for longer sessions but to train your mind start slowly.

I give these tips and more on my podcast The Dope Clique Show.  You can take a listen below:

Digital vs Physical

What’s better, digital or physical media?  I’ve had so much discussion about this lately.  Some people are all about that digital life, like myself, and then there are the purists that want to be able to feel and thumb through the books. Split crowd.

While I’m about that digital life I do like certain “live” versions of books. This is typically some type of reference book that I’ll highlight, write in or come back to at some point. I’ll take a physical copy for that purpose. If its some murder mystery that I’m reading to pass the time then it’s digital all the way.  I feel like physical books shouldn’t die just for purposes that I mentioned but at the same time I can understand how they are dying due to the new digital age and ease of technology.

Mostly all of my media is digital from books to movies to music. Everything is in the cloud or digitally stored on some external hard drive somewhere. This is a good and bad thing. It’s good for access but bad if it gets corrupted or lost. I’m one of the people that has a backup for a backup and I always have the mindset that if I lose it I can get it again, even if it took what seemed like forever to get it in the first place. I’m ready for the digital revolution I just don’t know if the rest of the world is.
